FIRST WE NEED TO FIND THE RIGHT CAR TO RESTORE. GET A REAL NICE BODY, LITTLE OR NO RUST. TRY TO BE SURE ALL THE PARTS ARE THERE, COMPLETE OR MOSTLY COMPLETE. DONT THROW AWAY THE PHONE NUMBER OF THE GUY WHO SOLD YOU THE CAR. THAT LAST PART IS NOT REALLY IMPORTANT,YOU HAVE PROBABLY ALREADY HEARD EVERY EXCUSE,AND EXPLANATION . AS YOU CAN SEE I DONT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT BUYING THE RIGHT CAR.
DONT GET DISCOURAGED,ALL CARS ARE LIKE PEOPLE THEY HAVE A GOOD SIDE AND BAD. THIS IS THAT REAR EXCEPTION, THIS IS THE BADDER SIDE. I SHOWED YOU THIS CAR ONCE AND SAID A REAL MAN COULD FIX IT. BEFORE YOU START TELLING THE STORY ABOUT THE ONE OUT OF THE RIVER BED, TURNED UP SIDE DOWN,AND YOUR BUDDY POURED GAS IN THE CARB.SHE FIRED RIGHT UP. NEVER MIND.
WHEN EVER I BUY A CONVERTIBLE I ALWAYS ASK HOWS THE TOP.
YOU KNOW THE STORY ,LITTLE OLD LADY OWNED IT ,,,,THE SPARES NEVER BEEN ON THE GROUND.
NEVER MIND ALL THE SECOND GUESSING,WHINING, AND COMPLANING.TEAR THE DANG THANG OFF THE FRAME. MANY WILL ASK WHAT ALL EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO TAKE THE BODY OFF THE FRAME. IF YOU BOUGHT THE RIGHT CAR, YOU WILL NEED AN A FRAME AND SOME CABLES AND EYE HOOKS. SOME GUYS USE A COUPLE CHERRY PICKERS. WE EVEN HAVE A BACK HOE. NONE OF THE ABOVE WERE NECESSARY HERE.
EVERY FRAME HAS A GOOD END AND A BAD END, YOU CAN GUESS ,THIS ONE HAS A BAD , AND BADDER END. BUT YOU MAY WANT TO TAKE IT APART AND SAND BLAST, BEAD BLAST ECT., ALL THE PARTS. CLEANING IT ALL NOW AS GOOD AS YOU CAN WILL MAKE THE RESTORATION OF THE FRAME A LOT EASIER.
I WAS CERTAIN I WOULD REMEMBER HOW IT ALL WENT BACK TOGEATHER, SOME HOW IT DOESNT LOOK QUITE RIGHT , THE CHIN BONE WAS CONNECTED TO THE SHOULDER BONE....... NOW IS THE "RED GREEN" PART OF THIS SHOW. GET OUT THE MECHANICS BEST FRIEND. DUCK TAPE..... NO "THE ASSEMBLY MANUAL." IT WILL LOOK ALL BETTER THE NEXT TIME I SHOW YOU.
TOLD YA. I CAN SEE MIKE AT AUTO CITY, "WHAT THE HECK" OH YA AND SCRATCHING HIS BUTT...... THANKS TO MIKE AND ALL THE GUYS AT AUTO CITY CLASSIC THIS CAR MIGHT STILL COME BACK TO LIFE.
THE HEART OF THE MATTER, THE 348 CU. MOTOR AND 700 R4 WHAT THE HECK. NEVER MIND ITS GOING TO BE A DRIVER. OLD SCHOOL POWER STEERING, GIVE THAT DRIVEWAY A LITTLE CHARACTER. JUST SHOWING OFF, I REALLY DID A LOT OF WORK JUST DONT WANT TO GIVE UP ALL MY SPEED SECRETS.
THIS IS A SNEAK PREVIEW TO KEEP YOU INTERESTED. ACTUALY THE PICTURES I CROPED ARE ALL OUT OF ORDER AND SOME ARE MISSING. I HAVE TO FIND THE DISC AND RE CROP SOME PICTURES. ANY ONE WHO KNOWS ME KNOWS THAT I AM ALREADY DOING MORE THAN I AM COMFORTABLE WITH,JUST PASTING UP PICTURES AND WRITTING A LITTLE COPY. WE HAVE TWO COMPUTERS IN THIS OFFICE AND THE ONLY THANG I COULD DO IS TURN THE LIGHTS ON IN THE MORNING. TALK AMOUNG YOURSELVES ,I WILL BE RIGHT BACK.
I guess i should have told you, this car is cay coral. it had been painted red at some point. If this car had not been my first 58 cv. and the first one i could afford, i would never have tried to restore it. All that being said i am real glad i did it. I bought the car from Barry West in Orlando Fl. He bought it from somebody at late great, who bought it from that little old lady. It was an original 348 with dealier 4 speed. I told you how to take the body off the frame, i didnt need any equipment. I cut it in sections and took it off in pieces. As i think you can see.
I GUESS I COULD HAVE SHOWN THIS PICTURE A LITTLE EARLIER, MY PICTURES ARE IN TWO FOLDERS, AND OUT OF ORDER. ANYWAYS THIS IS HOW I STARTED ,I TORE OFF THE TOTAL JUNK AND STARTED SAND BLASTING AS I WENT. I SHOULD HAVE WARNED YOU TO LOOK AT THIS BEFORE LUNCH,THATS ME IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL. NOW ALL YOU GUYS WHO HAVE DONE BUSINESS WITH ME OVER THE PHONE, CAN UNDER STAND WHY IM SO SLOW, IM OLD.
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS,YOU LUCKY DOGS. ANY WAYS, MY FRAME IS NOW IN ONE OF MY BUILDINGS BEING WORKED ON DURING THOSE REAR DAYS IN TEXAS WHEN THE SUN AINT SHINNIN. THAT WAS SOUNDING TEXAN, I DONT KNOW HECK IM FROM DETROIT. ANY WAYS THIS WAS A DELRAY 2 DOOR BODY PRETTY SOLID. I NEED A GOOD SOLID FRAME TO WORK OFF OF. AND GOOD FLOORS COWL, AND LOWER QUARTERS. NOT TO MENTION A REAL SOLID TRUNK TO KEEP THAT SPARE OFF THE GROUND. AS YOU CAN SEE I KEEPT ALL THE GOOD STUFF I NEEDED AND CUT OFF THE REST. NOW YOU CAN SEE THE WINDSHELD POST IS NOT A SEDAN. I CUT OFF THE TOP, AND WELDED ON THE CONVERTIBLE POST. DONT FORGET TO USE A FEW GOOD PIECES OF WINDSHIELD RUBBER, AND AN OLD WINDSHELD. AND CHECK YOUR SELF MANY TIMES. FORGET THE TAPE MEASURE. I CANT EXPLANE IT JUST FORGET THE TAPE.
i am using the complete cowl, toe, floor boards.i have simple welded the windsheld post from my rusty convertible on to this solid cowl. this is all good 50 year old detroit iron. this gives me a good solid foundation to build on. see the bottom of the rear quarters, also we have solid rockers inside and out side. also good solid detroit iron. this is not ment to be a negitive coment on the after market sheet metal. we use a lot of it. i only want to alow that an old rusty convertible deserves to be saved. if this requires a grafting process so be it. i would rather see a car built back up on a good solid 58 foundation than welded all togeather with after market metal. as you can see the cv. doors are hung in place to start off with a good alignment.
wanted to show u this from anouther angle,,, its got to look better some how.
this is the pan that the rear seat hyangs on, it also is welded to each inner fender well, guess what unless you streach it it is going to give you a good idea of how wide the interior should be.
